Ask An Ambassador: Not All Comments Are Created Equal

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Alliance 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

Define "Comment" as it pertains to ActiveRain:

Is it a minimum of 50 characters that provide 25 points?

Or is it an opportunity to engage, build relationships and plant seeds for future referrals?

How you approach comments goes a long ways towards how much (or little) you can gain from ActiveRain participation.

Comments are an easy way of becoming visible to other members of the community, but comments are potentially double edged.

Experienced members can readily determine the purpose behind a comment.  Was it for points, or engagement?

To be blunt, if I see that someone's approach is to leave 25 generic comments in 5 minutes, I have no respect for that.  The intent of this community has been totally missed IMO.  That type of behavior devalues the point system.

On the other hand, a thoughtful comment?  That's opening the door to a lot more.  Many of the relationships I enjoy in the Rain started a decade ago with a comment.  One led to another and another, and over time we get to know each other.

Some believe firmly in reciprocation (you leave a comment on mine, I leave a comment on yours).

Me personally, I don't feel obligated to practice reciprocation and I don't want others to feel obligated to leave a comment for me just because I left one on their post.

When you're first starting off, leaving a lot of comments is one of the best ways to get your face out there and start to be recognized.  Reciprocation is probably a good policy for someone establishing their Rain identity.

Again, me personally, my time to participate here has shrunk significantly since I first joined (busier with real estate, more dogs, more cats, more honeybees!), and some activity that used to be Rain based has shifted to Facebook.  The net result, a comment from me outside of responding to comments on my own posts is a bit rare.  It's a catch-22, I'd like to leave more comments, but I also need to sleep each night :)

Bottom line, commenting is a major contributor to how much of a network you build in the Rain.  Just leaving a comment by itself won't get it done.  Quantity without quality won't get the job done.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

I totally agree about the value of comments. A drive-by comment that has nothing to do with the post? No value. A comment that shows the commenter actually read the material? Much better!

I try to respond to all comments on my posts, but a drive-by that is apparent they didn't read the post?? Ugghhhhhh.

Hello Bill... "Quantity without quality won't get the job done." Couldn't have said it better myself. When someone leaves a drive-by comments you just know it. By the same token, while I don't necessarily believe in one on one reciprocity, at some point if I'm consistently commenting on someone's posts and they never reciprocate, they are telling me they are not interested in any kind of relationship.

It's the catch-22 for me.  I don't get around much, a few comments here and there and the Q&A section if there's something I can add value to.  My balance is to try and respond to every comment left on my posts.

Bill- I couldn't agree more. The engagement here has decreased and that's a pity. Leaving a comment just for the points or to show that you left a comment is so transparent and yes, it does not add to the value of what we have.

Show the blogger that you actually read what they had to say. Be aware if the blogger is indeed an agent, not a stager or lender so that you don't tell them to go sell a home.

IMO, the Q&A section took away some of the blog post commenting.  Add in some other factors and there's just less and less commenting on most posts.

I agree with this post in so many ways.  Newbies would gain a lot by getting out there to comment and in turn get reciprocation. It is easy to see if a commenter actually read the post just by the nature of their comment, or I learn so much here on ActiveRain

Ed, When new commenting might be the best way to get known by the established members.  The quality of that comment might be just what gets someone to come over and check out their own posts.

Liz and Bill Spear  I only forgive you because I know if I call you for help, you😎 will always be there for me. I do think engaging with each other is good to create relationships  as well as others  that I have become close with by commented on their posts throughout the years

I'd love to engage as much as I used to, but I just can't spend the same amount of time.  But I'm always on call for my ActiveRain friends and will do the best I can to help them.

I have gone as far as to delete the drive by.  How I wish there was a block feature. I used to be all about the reciprocating comment for comment, but real estate was REAL slow then.  Today I do good to read a couple of posts and scan through the questions once in a while.  But still, I don't EVER leave drive bys.

And that was the thing for me back then.  I DID have the time.  My engineering job was less demanding, the real estate business was slower, and we had fewer pets and no honeybees.  And I've taken on some additional responsibilities over the years that mean reading and commenting have had to be reduced.  It's just my reality.  Maybe after we move and get settled in next year I'll have more time for participation.

Bingo. I cringe when I see a comment that has no connection to the post. It's a drive by for points. It really does more harm than good to the commenters reputation or likelihood of building a relationship.

I've had some over the years that more or less put that person on the instant NO REFERRAL list.  I might never have had one for their area, but if I did, it wouldn't be to them.

Many, many moons ago I easily blew past the daily limit for comments.  Now, there are days I leave no comments.  A high day (not counting responses on my own post) might now be 10, and that's a rarity.  I wish it were different, but I've had to trade other things for some of the time I spend here on social engagement.

Good afternoon Bill,

I so appreciate your thoughtful posts each Tuesday. It is disappointing when I see the serial drive by comments from the same people completed on many posts in less than 10 minutes. Why bother??? I too have needed to revise my time commitment on AR. There are so many hours in a day and I've had to re-prioritize my time.

May 03, 2022 03:11 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Dorie, There's only so much we can do in a day, and sometimes that's got to mean less time in the Rain.

Fantastic post that most of us can relate to Bliz. I saw today, where a member had some fun with a serial copy/paster, thanking him for the points to help get him to 2MIL points soon!

Reciprocation goes a long way toward relationships. I never promised to comment on someone's page if they commented on mine. I do my best most days though.

Early on, I reciprocated regularly.  Now, it's a trade off in my time and there are other things I do that help people that take priority over leaving comments.

Great post Bill!  I love reading and commenting on others' posts, but I don't always have the reciprocity down pat.  I try!  I so understand!  Between writing my own course, public speaking, selling real estate, and advocacy work with the City of Scottsdale - my time is limited as well.  I just don't have your engineering brain though which is a downfall!

May 03, 2022 08:13 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Exactly!  You've got a lot on your plate and when you look at what needs to be a priority, reciprocating may not make the top of the list.  It's understandable and IMO an expectation that should be relaxed.

Good morning.  I too am a bit turned off when a comment has nothing to do what so ever with my post.  Copy and paste...I believe Endre Barath, Jr. recently had a post mentioning the same frustrations.  I suspect 'more honeybees' could lead to a couple posts all on its own.  Enjoy the hump day ahead.  Mark

Mark, We've got five full hives and a 6th that we're trying to start.  Sometimes the bees don't take much of our time, but for instance the previous weekend we spent the bulk of both afternoons working in the hives getting them ready to expand during the Spring season.

Getting you to your next with a zero failure rate!

Getting to know those in the AR community is really great. Simply because you become a part of that community.  We get to learn from each other and we get to share ideas.  Receiving referrals is an added benefit as well.  How nice to be able to confidently refer business to someone you know from this community!

May 04, 2022 04:50 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

Wendy, to me having insight into how a potential referral partner thinks, acts, conducts their business is one of the best things about this community.  Some people pass with flying colors, others "tell" me through their posts and comments that they shouldn't be trusted with that business.

This is a great read for those who are new, but also perhaps a reminder to others about the value of commenting in a manner that adds value to the conversation, and the post, and engages others.

Comments have been a valuable part of AR from the very beginning...what better way to get to know each other online? Or to decide otherwise.
